Intel’s new Pine Trail chipset is being used by most netbook makers for the next generation of their existing models. The question is, however, are these 2nd generation netbooks really going to be significantly better than their predecessors?

Let’s take Dell’s new Mini 10 as an example. The significant changes are as follows:

1) The new Mini 10 better accommodates the 6-cell battery pack. Whereas on the old Mini 10 the 6-cell battery felt less than secure in it’s holder, the new model includes some extra body at the back to keep the larger battery in place.

2) Whereas the original Mini 10 had the power jack and Kensington lock on the left side of the computer, the new model has these on the back of the computer which is much more convenient.

Otherwise, the majority of the changes such as a terraced keys or the new textured surface around the keyboard are largely cosmetic.
