In order to receive support from Microsoft, businesses using Windows XP will be forced to upgrade to Service Pack 3, according to reports. This is their latest step into ending the run of Windows XP.

Although currently in its extended support phase which will run until spring 2014, Windows XP users will need to have a supported service pack to be qualified for this service. The end date for Windows XP SP2 is July of this year, while the SP1 end date was back in October of 2006.

Business who use Windows XP will need to install Service Pack 3. This is available through download Windows Update online service. In addition, those not using Service Pack 2 will have to install it prior to installing Service Pack 3.

Microsoft will inform their users of upgrades. When a user visits either the Windows Blog or Windows.com, they will detect if a user is running SP2 or not and will advise a download.

July 2010 will also bring to an end support for Windows 2000, first released ten years ago. Vista users, meanwhile, will have until April 2010 to upgrade to the latest Support Pack version.
