3D TVs, although still a long way from controlling the market, are expected to dominate in next ten years, according to reports.

Although only 1.2 million units will be shipped this year, that number is expected to jump to 15.6 million in 2013 and an astounding 64 million in 2018. The main obstacle for 3D TV’s success in 2010 is the cost (which are typically ?1150) and the compatibility of the 3D glasses needed for viewing. This cost is the difference in success between 3D TVs and their LCD brethren.

However, this price concern will soon disappear, as sources believe that the cost per unit will drop considerably, even as low as ?700 in the next six years. This price, according to US-based market watcher iSuppli, will attract audiences, with mainstream sales beginning as soon as 2012, with an expected ticket price of approximately ?850.

There is speculation whether 3D TVs will be competitive with plasma, LCD, or OLED TVs even if their price drops as radically as expected. Even so, 3D TVs will still only account for less than 2.5% of the market, according to some sceptics.
