After two years of Google being on top of the coveted superbrand list, Microsoft has finally been crowned king. The computer software giants have been the proverbial bridesmaid for years, finishing runner’s up in 2007 and 2008 (fifth in 2009), have finally become the bride, at the expense of search engine king Google.

Superbrand, the list of the top 500 business brands, is compiled by the Centre for Brand Analysis. Chairman Stephen Cheliotis stated that Microsoft and Google have been battling it out for top spot for four years, and now it is Microsoft who finally comes out on top.

Second place on the list went to Rolls-Royce, while Blackberry rose from 42nd place all the way up to 3rd.

British Airways makes their way into the top 10, finding them in 8th place. This is a large rise from their 36th place in 2009. However, this success may be marred by the success of their rivals, Virgin Atlantic, who rose to 4th place.

Credit card company Visa have a place in the top ten, finishing 9th, up from 14th last year.

Even without government financial support, two financial institutions found success on this year’s list: HSBC moved from 61st in 2009 up to 41st, and Barclay’s made a jump into the top 75, from 107th in 2009 all the way up to 73rd in this year’s installment.
