Proposal for a .xxx domain reopened
Three years after the original proposal to make a pornographic-specific domain name .xxx was dismissed, it seems another proposal will be made soon.
Originally rejected on moral grounds by Icann, who administers internet addresses, the proposal has been filed again by Stuart Lawley, chairman of ICM Registry: “We believe that Icann’s new leadership has the vision to embrace the decision as an opportunity to strengthen the Icann model and comply with the rule of law. We are eager to execute a registry agreement, complete the build-out of our business and implement the vision that started all of this over six years ago,” he stated.
Lawley believes that Icann were influenced by anti-pornography lobbyists as well as British administration, to which the panel (consisting of ex-judges) agreed, writing, “The board was pressed to do so by the government of the United States and by quite a number of other influential governments, and Icann was bound to ‘duly take into account’ the views of those governments. It is not at fault because it did so.”
With the introduction of a new Icann chairman, advocates of the new pornography-specific web domain believe their road to success is a little easier than before; however, they still face stiff opposition, from both anti-pornography groups and the Adult industry as well. They believe censorship will be increased, forcing the pornography industry into a corner. Larry Flynt, publisher of Hustler magazine stated, “.xxx is an inherently dangerous idea with no real purpose. Only if it becomes a tool of censorship will it achieve its goal of preventing access to adult content by minors”.
