Sky packages categories of digital TV programmes
Sky seems to be following the path of BT vision channels as it now offers its programme packs based upon categories rather than volume of channels. This continues the current trend in digital TV to assist United Kingdom television customers in avoiding the purchase of channels they have no desire to watch. Popular categories now offered by Sky include news and events, children’s programming, and primarily sports.
Other categories feature topics such as education, style and culture. This new system seems to be working out perfectly as Manchester United fans generally have no interest in watching classical ballet. Using categories to define programming costs has generally lowered the price for TV packages. Popular digital television consumer assistance website DigitalChoices.co.uk report’s that United Kingdom television watchers and buyers are actually switching TV providers based on the ability of the company to more specifically target their viewing preferences. This change in programme purchase structure allows for significant savings, as if one chooses six different category packs along with a premium sports or movie package they can expect to save between seven and 20 pounds per month.
More importantly those same customers have the satisfaction of knowing they are only paying for exactly the type of television they prefer. BT vision meanwhile continues to offer a base package of cable Freeview at no cost included with the basic BT broadband package. They also allow expansion of programming on a program by program basis.
