There’s been talk online for some time about the fact that Google will be developing their own mobile phone rather than simply selling their Android operating system to other manufacturers. This week these rumours have been confirmed by the Wall Street Journal – the phone is not only real but a prototype has already been developed and is currently in use by Google employees. The new handset is called the ‘Nexus One’.

The Nexus One will certainly start its life with a bang – It’s using the amazingly fast Snapdragon phone processor as well as an OLED touch screen making a device that is thinner than the iPhone. On the inside the hardware is rumoured to be manufactured by HTC and based around the general configuration of the HTC passion.

The good news for people interested in the new handset is that it could actually be available to buy as early as January next year, and will certainly be released early in 2010. The phone is rumoured to be GSM based device and is likely to be unlocked and sold through Google rather than through a carrier partnership like the iPhone.

Of course, the phone will be using the Android operating system that has seen massive growth in 2009. Most major carriers offer Android mobile devices including exciting newer phones like the Verizon Droid and the Motorola Cliq. Google will obviously be competing head to head with these companies as well as HTC themselves, even though they are making the Nexus One.

It could mean that many big name manufactures start looking elsewhere for an operating system rather than trying to compete with Google themselves. There might also problems if the phone is running on the rumoured Android 2.1 system as the only version currently available to other phone makers is 2.0.1.

Whatever happens, it will certainly be happening in the near future. Maybe Google feels like other handsets haven’t really lived up to what they believe Android is capable of. If anyone is setup with the potential to really challenge the supremacy of the iPhone, it’s Google.
