Despite the popularity of bluetooth headsets, it appears that a large proportion of UK drivers still insist on continuing to use mobile phones by holding them in their hand whilst actually driving, found research by the Transport Research Laboratory.

The survey was conducted in London earlier in 2009, and shows a major increase in the use of mobile phones held in the hands of drivers of all motor vehicles.

“Since 2007, trends have shown an increase in hand-held mobile phone use, when increased penalties for using a mobile phone whilst driving were introduced. In addition, hands-free phone use has increased considerably for all vehicles, in particular for taxi drivers, since the first survey in 2006,”

Another finding of TRL’s report discovered is that the enforcing of the ban on holding your mobile phone whilst behind the wheel is perhaps not happening in a tough enough manner

The report also seemed to find that people using their mobile phones whilst driving vehicles were actually around 4 times more likely to crash than those not.

We would like our readers opinions on how this can be dealt with and, indeed, IF you think it is an issue at all?
