The PSP Go hasn’t had a great time since launch. In fact, It’s been criticised right from its inception. The system is the next evolution of Sony’s handheld PSP video game console, but despite many new features and a new design is really just a model upgrade from the original rather than a new handheld entirely.

Sony removed the UMD drive which allows games to be loaded from a properatiary format invented by Sony called ‘Universal Media Disc’. When the system was first released both Games and Movies were available, but the idea of buying movies you already owned to watch on a smaller screen didn’t really catch on, with tech savvy users tending to convert their films to the PSPs video format and transfer them to memory stick.

Games continued to use the UMD system but with the release of the PSP Go, even Sony has given the format a break. The PSP Go is the first console to rely solely on digital downloads rather than store purchased disks.

However, the system has seen its fair share of problems with a price point only marginally lower than a PS3 (which comes with a Blu Ray drive) and no way for previous PSP owners to transfer their existing collections over to the digital format.

The latest rumours are now that Logitech are developing a UMD add-on for the UMD-free console. If that seems weird it only proves that there’s a market for the PSP Go owners to want to play their older games, and a sign that Sony should have given users the ability to update their collections from the start.

Right now though this just remains a rumour, so if you are desperate to continue playing your collection on your new system, you might have to wait a little longer yet.
