Universal Studios to Create “Flipper” Discs
If you were one of the people to rush out and buy a DVD system and a bunch of DVD films when the technology first start selling on UK shores, you would remember the ‘joys’ of the flipper disc. The disc was basically a double sided DVD which you would play on one side, watch the half the film, and then flip over for the rest of the film. Obviously, they didn’t really catch on.
However, Universal Studios is bringing them back. Thankfully, not in the same format as we saw in the nineties, but flipper discs are coming to stores next year regardless. The disks will include a DVD copy of a film on one side and the Blu-Ray copy on the other. The idea behind the concept is to let people upgrade thire movie collection at their own pace rather than buying DVDs that will eventually go the way of the VHS in time.
The success of these discs isn’t really going to be in the idea though – it’s much more about the pricing. If users can buy a DVD and Blu-Ray movie at once for only a few pennies more, these things are likely to take off, but if the price goes too high people will likely not bother. It’s worth remember that people interested in this are people who have yet to invest in a Blu-Ray player at all so are likely to be unwilling to spend a lot of cash on new movies.
Still, if you’re one of the people who are still waiting for the right time to upgrade to Blu-Ray but don’t want to keep buying films that you’ll one day have to replace, these new discs might be the perfect interim solution.
