As I type this I’m using what is called speech recognition software. So in fact I’m not typing this at all, I’m speaking into a microphone and my words are being converted into text. Actually my words are first converted into computer code and that is used to create the text you’re reading on your computer.

In essence my laptop computer acts the same as a VoIP server does when you or I use it for telecommunications over the Internet. When we use a company such as Vonage for our home phone and broadband service we’re using the core technology of speech recognition software. It would seem that the future of all telecommunications and information technology is to be placed in the hands of these huge server based applications. Interestingly enough Bill Gates and Microsoft Corporation’s failed attempt at WebTV offered this same scenario nearly 10 years ago. All that remains now for server side telecommunications to dominate the market place is the creation of connectivity hardware equal in speed to programs for communications interfacing.

This may all sound very complicated and fancy but what it really means is that companies such as British Telecom will need to discard obsolete ideas such as the fixed rate for a BT landline sending snail paced signals to and from your home in favor of new high speed technologies. No, I wouldn’t look to ever receive free line rental from BT or any other company. But I do look forward to a time in the very near future where telephone cables of any kind are no longer in use.
