Earlier BlackBerry was on August 31st deadline by India to provide access to the codes to assess the security problems. But, according to recent reports, India has agreed to allow messenger service from BlackBerry beyond 31st August deadline, but email services could be shut down if access is not given to the encrypted data. According to the source, discussions between India telecommunications ministry and agencies and a technical team from RIM has started. Both the teams are addressing the security worries over some BlackBerry devices.

“Discussions have started today. They will continue this week and whole of next week. Discussions are on both the services,” said the source on condition of anonymity. And the government is expecting at least some technical solution from Research In Motion to come out during the discussions.

The source was asked if the BlackBerry would be allowed to operate after the deadline, he said, “BlackBerry services, including phone, SMS and Messenger will run, not sure about enterprise mail.” India has been assured from RIM of manual access to BlackBerry instant messages by 1st of September and automated access will be given by the end of the year.

Three mobile operators have confirmed that they have received letters from the Department of Telecommunications which gave them deadline to put in place monitoring capability for BlackBerry messenger and email services. “We have received a letter … asking us to ensure that legal intervention capability is put in place for BlackBerry services by 31 August 2010,” a statement from operator Tata Teleservices said.
